An old supervisor once shared these words of wisdom and they are applicable, regardless of the particular industry you may find yourself working in. Efficiency leads to the ever elusive productivity goal that everyone seems to be constantly in search of. Recently, we have had several projects for customers, new and old, that have wanted to improve their efficiency when it came to their telecommunications infrastructure, fiber in particular.
In the past, it has been difficult to find a quality telecom solution that is robust enough to handle and appropriately model a fiber infrastructure. Organizations suffer from a variety of issues with their existing solutions. Some are fortunate to at least have a system in place that is utilizing a database to store their data for easier access, but the user interfaces they work with are clunky at best. Others, however, have had their data spread across numerous drawing files with no real way to connect the data together or view the overall infrastructure. In both of these cases and some in between, we have been able to successfully implement our Telecom Module for Autodesk’s Map 3D in order to provide a solution.
The Telecom Module from Brockwell IT provides an easy to use end-user interface for creating new infrastructure as well as managing your existing infrastructure. Each aspect of installing equipment is handled behind the scenes so that a drafter simply needs to select the appropriate equipment for a particular structure from a list of available options. Complex circuiting and connectivity logic are also handled in the background so that connecting fibers and maintaining integrity in the infrastructure only requires a few simple mouse clicks from the user. The user simply chooses the nodes from each piece of equipment that is being connected together, and the Telecom Module will automatically create all of the appropriate relationships within the database and the user interface will update to show that they are now connected.
From an administrative point of view, it is easy to setup your particular model and deploy it for use. There is an interface for administrators to create specifications for the various types of equipment and facilities that exist in your particular infrastructure, which allows full control over the features that are created by drafters. Additionally, the module can be customized to incorporate an existing data model that is already in place and then be further modified from there.
All of this works together to form a complete telecom solution that is easy to setup and easy to maintain. For example, a mid-size electric utility we are working with is now able to replace all of their old DWG files that housed their fiber data and move that into an Industry Model with an Oracle back end so that records can easily be created and updated within Map 3D instead of having to go back and search through a directory of DWG files to find the correct one for the area they are trying to work in. Additionally, they are working to create a complete but concise set of specifications for each of their equipment types to ensure that outdated equipment types are no longer present in their model. Regardless of the size of the organization or the state of their data, we have been able to implement our Telecom Module in order to provide better efficiency, productivity, and organization of their telecom infrastructure.
