As part of our URISA presentation earlier this month, I had the opportunity to delve into some exciting new features using the Autodesk Connector for ArcGIS Online, which allows us to combine GIS data with our BIM model, bringing any layer available from our GIS to help to take better decisions in our design projects. In the video below we demonstrate how to upload a layer from ArcGIS Online from our organization to identify street intersections with a high number of accidents reported. Once we identify the intersection, we can start running traffic simulations to see if we can improve the design of that particular intersection.
Though the traffic has to be studied in a more wholistic way using multiple examples, and knowing that whatever we define in this particular intersection would affect others around it, this will let us play with several variables that will help us to define different values. We could then use these values to see, for instance, if the size of the intersection can accommodate any type of vehicle, if adding different signs would help the traffic to flow better, if creating a ramp to turn instead of a dedicated lane would facilitate decongestion faster in the intersection.
There are many other factors to work with, and this can became a complex task, but this Traffic Simulation from InfraWorks will provide us the help to design a more realistic road to accommodate the right amount of traffic that could be expected in a particular time of the day, improve the flow, and ultimately reduce the number of accidents.
